Mission It is the mission of the Ka Pilina Interactive Arts Society, Inc. (501c3) to bring together people separated by distance and culture by supporting and promoting interactive art (art that is participatory) in Hawaii, in order to grow and strengthen community ties and build Social Capital. History Ka Pilina initially born in the summer of 2002 as an unorganized "community group" when Andrew Cuniberti (or Andi) became the first Burning Man Hawaii Regional Contact. Together with a growing number of Burning Man veterans (aka "burners") he organized a series of free interactive art beach gatherings on public land for the first couple of years. Ka Pilina also has grown to the neighbor islands, currently the Big Island is one of the most active, they have also hosted our first festivals on private land, Rebirth (2006 and 2007).Ka Pilina incorporated as a nonprofit on January 24, 2006 (we were informed of our provisional 501c3 status in June 2006) and after two years we are now fine tuning a statewide organization to serve the community effectively. Oahu should have it's own Ka Pilina Interactive Arts Festival in late 2008 and the Maui and Kauai communites are growing and not too far behind. The Ka Pilina - Burning Man (Black Rock City LLC) relationship Ka Pilina is also the official Burning Man Hawaii Regional group, one of over 100 similar Regional groups around the world. Beyond a letter of understanding there are no legal strings attached between the two organizations other than the shared values of the Burning Man 10 Principles. Ka Pilina donated to the Black Rock Arts Foundation (a 501c3 that split off from BRC LLC and gives art grants to artists worldwide) around $400 in 2007. Proceeds The Ka Pilina Interactive Arts Society, INC. is a nonprofit. We have provisional 501(c)3 status with the IRS and we are now a charitable and educational arts and community nonprofit. All proceeds go back to the community through the programs and events we produce. Ka Pilina is an all volunteer organization, no one makes money off of it. Ka Pilina uses the money it raises to transparently fulfill our core mission of supporting interactive art and building community. Pictures Pictures will be available soon.
